Round 9 Preview

There were a few shock losses for fancied sides last week and it will be an interesting round to see how they bounce back. There’s also a few teams that are deadset struggling and with the Dogs lifting themselves off the bottom of the ladder, they will be getting very nervous. This shapes as the best round of footy all season. LEt’s get into it!

Rabbitohs ($1.26) vs Broncos ($3.90)

  • No Haas for Broncs
  • Carrigan returns
  • Bunnies attack still clunky
  • Cody slowly improving post Reynolds
  • Time for Bunnies to click

The Broncs have now strung two wins together, something they have struggled to do for a while now. They’re not a team that travels too well thought and they come up against a Bunnies side that is slowly starting to improve. The Broncs got the jump on the Bunnies in round 1 but expect Cody and his left edge attack to test Staggs and Cobbo. Without Haas eating metres, the Broncs might make a few more errors than they have previously and give the Bunnies enough looks at their line to capitalise.

Raiders ($1.78) vs Bulldogs ($2.05)

  • Doggies with a much needed win!
  • Jack Wighton suspended for Raiders
  • Makeshift spine for Raiders
  • Can the Doggies go back to back?

Doggies fans finally had something to celebrate again when they downed the Roosters last week. Coach Baz rode every minute on the sideline and it was phenomenal viewing. The Raiders on the other hand have not been able to play 80 mins for a number of weeks now. One thing the Dogs will do is play the full 80. Carn the Dogs, go back to back!

Panthers ($1.22) vs Eels ($4.40)

  • Unsurprisingly, Arthur dropped
  • Dylan Brown back to 6
  • Moses v Cleary
  • Panthers looked a shade flat last week (is that even possible?)

I hope I don’t get labelled a ‘troll’ but it’s an absolute no brainer to drop Arthur and move Dylan Brown back to the 6 jumper. Moses’ and Brown’s combination is one of the better halves partnerships in the game and I think they’re a big hope of turning things around very quickly. Completely forgive Parra the last 2 weeks and their form is fine. Penny are just a gun side but now might be a good time to get them, they looked a bit flat and made uncharacteristic errors against the woeful Titans. Parra can cover.

Sea Eagles ($1.16) vs Tigers ($5.25)

  • Turbo back!!!
  • We get the Trbojevic treble
  • Tigers crashed back to Earth last week
  • Manly very brave in defeat against Souths

Turbo makes his return from a knee injury and Manly fans will be hoping he’s back to his brilliant best. Manly had to play the majority of the game last week against Souths a man down after Lawton dropped Murray on his head and was rightfully sent off. Manly had the audacity to lead 10-2 shortly after before feeling the pinch late. The Tigers have certainly put the effort in lately but they really lack attacking options. Manly, mainly Turbo, will score far too many points for them. Manly win well.

Roosters ($1.28) vs Titans ($3.70)

  • Chooks really struggling
  • Should Robbo be under more scrutiny?
  • Titans are poo (call me a troll)
  • Fifita out injured

The Chooks, under the Salary Sombrero, have a star-studded lineup but have looked pretty ordinary at times this season, none worse than their loss to the Dogs last week. They were comprehensively beaten by the Dragons the week before. They are too good a team to continue to play this way and they’re fortunate to play a David Fifita less Titans, who suck. Seriously, if the Chooks lose this they should just take a holiday and come back next season.

Cowboys ($1.17) vs Knights ($5)

  • Cows could be a serious footy team
  • The Knights are not
  • Makeshift halves for the Knights
  • Won’t just be the Townsville weather that gets the Knights hot under the collar

The Cowboys have won 5 from 8 this season and continually get undervalued by the market, until now. Under coach Todd Payten they have shown defensive resolve rarely seen in the modern game, something they were lacking in season’s past. The Knights are a poor footy team and the side they have named this week is one of the worst seen in a while. As long as the Cows didn’t spend the whole week celebrating their win, they’ll towel up the battling Knights.

Storm ($1.07) vs Dragons ($8.50)

  • Storm flying as usual
  • Dragons been gritty but this is a bridge too far
  • Another massacre?

The Storm have bullied up on two ordinary teams the last fortnight and they get to go for the hatrick of 50+ points against the Dragons. The Saints have been gritty in their last couple beating the Chooks and Tigers but this is a different kettle of fish. I’d suggest the Dragons dig in and make things thought for Melbourne but they won’t be able to sustain that sort of effort for 80 mins. Jarome Hughes has looked to run the ball lately and expect him to take the line on and grab a try.

Sharks ($1.20) vs Warriors ($4.60)

  • Sharks shocked by Broncs last week
  • Warriors bounced back
  • Can the Sharks?

There were a lot of overreactions after the Shark’s shock loss to the Broncs last week, they looked flat and tired but that might still be a hangover from the Storm game a couple of rounds ago. They won’t be the last team to fall victim at Suncorp. The Warriors got away with a win after Lodge had his chin flicked and they were awarded a plucky penalty. They have a lot of defensive worries and that will be made worse when Talakai is steaming through their makeshift centre (whoever they decide to play there).

Good luck & good punting!
