Round 7 Preview

We jump from long weekend to long weekend and pay our respects to the fallen and current diggers – L’est we forget.

There’s plenty to get through this round with plenty of double-digit lines, the Dogs hit by Covid, Parra looking to bounce back, can the Tigers go back to back, Can the Dragons? Let’s get down to it shall we…

Sharks ($1.46) vs Sea Eagles ($2.75)

  • Sharkies held their own against Storm in defeat
  • Finucane a big loss
  • Hamlin-uele also out
  • Aloiai big loss for Manly
  • DCE vs Hynes

This would normally be a fierce battle fought in the middle of the field with both sides loving to play a gritty, get down in the trenches style footy, but with both sides missing key middles, this might be more of a battle of attack. The reigning Aus halfback, DCE, comes up against the new halfback on the scene in Nicholas Hynes. The kicking game of the respective halves will be crucial to who gets the chocolates. DCE can steer Manly to victory.

Broncos ($1.28) vs Bulldogs ($3.70)

  • Dogs hit by Covid & struggling to find players
  • Haas returns for Brisbane
  • Te Marie Martin set to play first game in 3 years
  • Should Brisbane ever be $1.28???

At the time of writing, news has just broken that the Bulldogs have had a lot of players test positive to Covid after a squad gathering recently. With no idea who will line up for the Dogs and a massive push for the Broncs in betting, I will keep my powder dry early.

Cowboys ($1.80) vs Titans ($2.02)

  • Both sides pretty much unchanged
  • Fifita has a good matchup on Luki
  • Battle of the locks – Tino & Lolo

We have to wait til 5.30 pm for our first game on Saturday and it isn’t exactly an exciting contest (unless you support one fo these two). David Fifita has looked really frustrated at times and had a lacklustre start to the season in comparison to expectations, but that could all change in this. He comes up against Heilum Luki who will get the baptism of fire with the wrecking ball singling him and Dearden out. Supercoach and Fantasy players, put the C on Fifita, he’s going big in this. Just pass him the ball…

Tigers ($3.90) vs Rabbitohs ($1.26)

  • Tigers! What a win last week!
  • Was that the Tigers GF?
  • Rabbits need Cody to start firing
  • Bunnies middles can win this early

Good on the Tigers for getting the monkey off their back and claiming victory in the final second thanks to a Hastings field goal. It was some game to watch! You can forgive the players for celebrating like they won the grand final but you have to think it will be emotionally difficult for them to repeat the performance. If they can, they can certainly win this. But I’ll back the Bunnies middles to stamp this one over early before the outside backs put it beyond doubt.

Knights ($3.25) vs Eels ($1.35)

  • Ponga signs extension
  • Parra need to bounce back after shock loss
  • 2 pm Sunday game – how good!
  • Bring it on!

Parra suffered a somewhat embarrassing 1 point loss to the previously winless Tigers last week and that would have stung them. The Eels are premiership contenders in many people’s books and we’ll see what they’re made of when they look to bounce back against a Knights side that has been mixing their form. These teams have had defensive struggles all season and expect no different here. Sunday arvo in what should be good conditions for footy – Points, points, and more points!

Panthers ($1.08) vs Raiders ($7.75)

  • Penny 20 point favourites
  • CNK dropped back to the bench for Raiders
  • Penny belted a massively understrength broncs
  • Raiders can aim up in this

Penny were far too good for a Broncs side that was hit by injuries and suspensions, they got a pass mark from me. The Raiders are a hit and miss team, who to be fair, seem to miss more than they hit, but their best can compete with Penny. They probably struggle to win but they can muscle up in the middle and Wighton can pressure Cleary. This will be much closer than the market suggests. Canberra at the line.

Dragons ($4.10) vs Roosters ($1.24)

  • ANZAC Day clash
  • Dragons got a much-needed win last week
  • Roosters still struggling for best form
  • Can the Dragons go back to back?

There’s been some cracking clashes between these two in this match up over the years. We may not be in for one of those in this but the SCG will take on more significance than a game of footy when the ANZAC commemoration takes place. The Roosters have really struggled at times this season and it’s hard to see them turning that around quickly. That said, the Dragons have been downright awful in patches. Off the back of a resounding win last week, I think the Dragons can cause an upset and go back to back.

Storm ($1.10) vs Warriors ($7.25)

  • Traditional ANZAC clash
  • Storm raging favourites
  • Warriors need their middles to stand up
  • Tough physical early exchanges

If the Warriors middles led by Founua-Blake and Lodge stand up and really take it to the Storm, we could be in for a cracking game. But, the Storm are too smart for that, they’ll kick early and long and turn the big boys around. It might be a bit of an arm wrestle early but expect Melbourne to blow this game wide open. Brandon Smith loves a run to the line and he’ll have a crack at some stage. The Warriors have let in some soft tries this year and Smith can take advantage. Carn the Big Cheese!

Good luck & good punting!
