Round 10 Preview – Magic Round
It’s going to be a wet Magic Round but we won’t let that dampen our spirits. Whilst we may not get to see the flyers darting up the sidelines, we can expect some bruising contests that will be won by the big boys in the middle. Who are the mudders? Let’s find out shall we!
Bulldogs ($1.73) vs Knights ($2.10)
- Battle for the spoon
- Cellar dwellers desperate for a win
- This will be far from magical
- Barnett and Clune back in for Knights
- Dogs pretty much unchanged
Magic Round kicks off by getting the shit out of the way early with the battle of the cellar dwellers. Deadset, both these sides are going that bad and have only managed 2 wins each, which leaves them at the bottom of the ladder. With all the rain forecast and the inability of these teams to find the try line, the total points under looks the play.
Sea Eagles ($1.60) vs Broncos ($2.35)
- Can Brother Ben outshine Turbo again?
- Battle of two big packs
- Haas & Capewell return
- An away home game for Broncs…
In a massive boost to the ‘home side in the away changerooms’ Payne Haas and Kurt Capewell make their return from injury. Ball control in tricky conditions will be crucial, both halfbacks will look to kick to the corners and apply pressure. This has the makings of a great arm wrestle. Brisbane’s pack can get on top of Manly and from there Reynold’s kicking game can get them home, plus the massive ‘home’ crowd!
Warriors ($2.95) vs Rabbitohs ($1.40)
- Warriors lost to 12 men last week
- Bunnies really struggling
- No faith in either of these two!
- Cam Murray out
Fair dinkum these sides are going bad. The Warriors somehow managed to lose to 12 men last week and the Bunnies got a fair old touch up by the Broncs. There’s plenty of pressure on Cody Walker and expect him to stand up this week. The Warriors have had some success shifting the ball to the left and hard running back rower Euan Aitken has scored a few tries. Not much confidence in this game so a small Same Game Multi of those two to score.
Titans ($1.95) vs Dragons ($1.87)
- Tricky game!!!
- Titans been poor last 3 weeks
- Average beaten margin of 22.7 points
- Dragons won 3 from last 4
The Titans have stunk it up the last 3 weeks with an average beaten margin of 22.7 points! They’ll be looking to turn their season around and get themselves off the bottom of the ladder when they face a Dragons side that has been flying under the radar. The Dragons were no match for the Storm last week but had previously put 3 wins together. AJ Brimson moves back to 5/8 and watch for him to have a cracker but in the end, the Dragons will show too much resolve for a Titans team without a backbone. Same Game Multi – Brimson to score & Dragons -1.5.
Storm ($2.20) vs Panthers ($1.68)
- Game of the round!
- No Pap for the Storm
- Penny at full strength
- Let’s get it on!
Easily the game of the round but will it be as close a game as everyone expects? Pap is a massive loss for the Storm but we’ve seen them perform well without him before. Penrith have been coasting for a few weeks now and you get the feeling they have had this game circled on the calendar for a while. Munster always saves his best for the big stage and Cleary has always excelled in the spotlight.
Sharks ($1.26) vs Raiders ($3.90)
- Nicho Hynes shifts back to fullback
- Tricky Trindall comes into the 7 jersey
- Still no Wighton for Raiders
I love the shift of Hynes back to fullback with the suspension of the coat hanging William Kennedy, he’s played the majority of his football there and he can sweep into the backline out wide and prove a handful. The Raiders got the win last week but they’re not much of a football team at the moment. The Sharkies were gritty to not only win, but cover, being a man down against the Warriors last week. Sharks to win well and Hynes to score.
Roosters ($2.25) vs Eels ($1.65)
- Another cracking game
- Two top 4 wannabes
- Both have been unconvincing at times having won 3 from their last 5
This shapes as an intriguing battle between two sides that would see a finish below the top 4 as a failure during the regular season. Parra bounced back in fine form last week downing the reigning Premiers, can they reproduce that? The Roosters had some fun beating up on a woeful Titans side, can they elevate to their best now? I think this game has the Roosters priced at their best and to my eye they still seem below their best.
Tigers ($3.35) vs Cowboys ($1.33)
- Tigers back to their losing ways
- Cows looking for 5 straight wins
- The conclusion of Magic Round!
Who knows what Suncorp Stadium will look like by the time this game rolls around on Sunday after a deluge of rain…The Cows have now won 4 on the trot, something they haven’t done for a long time, and they look the real deal under Todd Payten. The Tigers put 2 wins together before slumping to consecutive losses, they’re trying but just lack execution, especially in attack. The Cowboys will defend their line and make things very tough for the Tigers.
Good luck & good punting!
